To become an NHS patient at Cathedral Orthodontics, children under 18 must be referred by their general dental practitioner. We recommend regular dental visits to ensure your dentist refers you at the right time. This referral ensures that our specialist orthodontists can assess each case and determine the most appropriate course of treatment based on the individual needs of the patient.
Book a consultationOnce we receive the referral from your child’s dentist, our team will contact you to schedule an initial consultation. During your appointment, our specialist orthodontist will review your teeth using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN).
The Index of Treatment Need is used to assess children for eligibility for NHS orthodontic treatment on dental health grounds.
The Dental Health Component has five grades –
If you score between 4-5, you are eligible for free NHS orthodontic treatment and will be put on a waiting list for a treatment plan.
What if I don’t qualify for NHS treatment?
Unfortunately, not everyone can qualify for NHS treatment. However, we understand that orthodontic care is essential for people of all ages. While our NHS services are limited to children under 18, we also offer private orthodontic treatment for patients over 18.

Emergency NHS Treatment
We know that dental emergencies can be stressful and often require immediate attention. If you are in pain during surgery hours, please telephone the practice and every effort will be made to see you as soon as possible. Outside surgery hours please contact the out-of-hours service for advice. This service is commissioned by Cardiff and the Vale Health Board and can be contacted at 0300 1020 247.
